Job Title: Organist/Church Musician
Reports to: Director of Music, Pastor/Head of Staff (Worship & Music Committee)
Type of Position: Part-Time Hours: 4-10 per week
Position Start: January 2023
Degree in organ or music preferred

Requirements

  • Playing the musical portions of weekly worship service(s).

  • Selecting appropriate repertoire for each service (ex. prelude, offering, postlude)

  • Accompany the Chancel Choir. 

    • One 2-hour evening rehearsal and one Sunday morning service per week, also 2-3 additional 2-hour rehearsals during the year as needed to prepare for special music programs 

  • Familiarity with world/global and non-traditional sacred music 

  • Assist in planning worship with the Pastor, Director of Music, and Youth Choir Director (as schedule permits)

  • Be available to rehearse/conduct choir rehearsals and/or Sunday morning music during absence of the Director of Music*

  • Serve as substitute accompanist for children's and/or youth choirs, if available*

  • Perform music for weddings, memorial services, and other special services*

  • Assist Director of Music and pastoral staff in selection of music for regular worship services and for special music services, including:

    • Advent music service (1st Sunday in December)

    • Christmas Eve service

    • Spring Music Service (often with orchestra)

    • Maundy Thursday service

    • Easter Sunday

  • Arrange for substitutes during times of absence

Notes:

  1. This is a professional position, with monthly salary for 12 months/year (commensurate with experience) and includes five weeks paid vacation and paid sick leave.

  2. During the months of June, July, and August the choir does not rehearse on Thursday evenings. During June and July the Summer Choir meets at 9:30 on Sunday morning to prepare music for worship. During the month of August, soloists or small ensembles offer special music during worship. For all services, music is provided to the organist ahead of time to allow for appropriate preparation.

Audition Requirements

  1. Prepare hymn accompaniments for two hymns

    1. One required

    2. Candidate selects one from list

  2. Prepare accompaniment to a provided anthem

  3. Prepare 1-2 solo pieces that could be considered appropriate for

    1. Prelude

    2. Offertory

    3. Postlude
