PRELUDE

INTROIT                                 “This Is the Day”                                                                Pablo Sosa

WELCOME                                                                    Rev. Trip Porch

One: This is the day that the Lord has made

All: Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

*CALL TO WORSHIP

One: Hear, O people. The Lord our God is one.

All: We come to listen and to learn.

One: Tilt your ears toward the words that have been handed down to us.

All: Just as we have heard, we will tell the next generation about the goodness of God.

One: Let us worship God.

*HYMN INSERT                                                            “O little Children Gather”                                                        CANONBURY

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION                                                                                                 Jim Legg

God of every generation, you asked us to keep your words on our hearts. To talk of them when we sit at home and when we walk down the road, when we lie down and when we rise. We confess we have been forgetful. We have let the stories go untold. We have held back the gifts you asked us to use. We have served halfway and taught with half our attention. We have loved you with something less than all our heart, all our soul, all our strength. Forgive us. Set our hearts firm again. Make us faithful, so the next generation might put their hope in you. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*RESPONSE OF PRAISE 582“Glory to God, Whose Goodness Shines on Me”   GLORY TO GOD

*PASSING OF THE PEACE

One:   The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all,

     All:      And also with you.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

SCRIPTURE  Deuteronomy 6:4–7

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

                               Romans 12:7

"If your gift is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach.."

                               Psalm 78:1-7 CEB

 Listen, my people, to my teaching;

tilt your ears toward the words of my mouth.

I will open my mouth with a proverb.

I’ll declare riddles from days long gone—

ones that we’ve heard and learned about,

ones that our ancestors told us.

 We won’t hide them from their descendants;

    we’ll tell the next generation

all about the praise due the Lord and his strength—

the wondrous works God has done.

He established a law for Jacob

and set up Instruction for Israel,

        ordering our ancestors

to teach them to their children.

This is so that the next generation

and children not yet born will know these things,

and so they can rise up and tell their children

to put their hope in God—

        never forgetting God’s deeds,

        but keeping God’s commandments—

and so that they won’t become like their ancestors:

    a rebellious, stubborn generation,

a generation whose heart wasn’t set firm

and whose spirit wasn’t faithful to God.

     PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

We thank you, God, for you have fed us, the way you have fed your people in every generation. Now send us out to do the same. Make us teachers of your goodness and servants of your love. Put your words back on our hearts, and let us carry them into our homes and down every road we walk. We have tasted that you are good. May the children who come after us taste it too, and put their hope in you. Through Christ we pray. Amen.
