PRELUDE “Simple Gifts” arr. Valerie W. Stephenson
INTROIT "In God Alone" Jacques Berthier
WELCOME Rev. Mary Gene Boteler
One: This is the day that the Lord has made
All: Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
*CALL TO WORSHIP
One: Our God reigns; let the earth be glad.
All: God’s word is truth; let all creation sing.
One: We bow before God’s strength and majesty.
All: We gather to worship and make faithful witness.
One: We sing praises to the One whom God exalted
and gave him the name that is above every name,
All: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue should confess
that Jesus is Lord.
*HYMN INSERT “God of Peace and Justice” sung many times YA RAB AS-SALAMI
*PRAYER OF CONFESSION John Bell, the Iona Community Rev. Rick Nutt
One: Where ignorance, self-love and insensitivity have fractured life in community,
All: forgive us and give us your light, God of love.
One: Where injustice and oppressions have broken the spirit of peoples,
All: forgive us and give us your light, God who frees.
One: Where hunger and poverty, illness and death have made life an unbearable
burden,
All: forgive us and give us your light, God of grace.
One: Where suspicion and hatred, conflict and fear have challenged your goodness,
All: forgive us and give us your light, God of peace.
Eternal God,
open the eyes of the nations and peoples so that we may walk in the light of love:
remove ignorance and stubbornness so that we may drink from the fountains of your
goodness. Amen.

WE LISTEN FOR GOD’S WORD
ANTHEM “Harvest Is Hope” Paul Gibson
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
SCRIPTURE Philippians 2:1-11 NRSVRU
If, then, there is any comfort in Christ, any consolation from love, any partnership in the Spirit, any tender affection and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or empty conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests but to the interests of others.
Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, assuming human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a human, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross.
Therefore God exalted him even more highly and gave him the name that is above every other name, so that at the name given to Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Holy Wisdom, Holy Word
Thanks be to God

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD
*HYMN 756 “O God of Every Nation” LLANGLOFFAN
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH “A Declaration of Faith”
We declare that Jesus is Lord. His resurrection is a decisive victory over the
powers that deform and destroy human life. His lordship is hidden. The world
appears to be dominated by peoples and systems that do not acknowledge his
rule. But his lordship is real. It demands our loyalty and sets us free from the fear
of all lesser lords who threaten us. We maintain the ultimate sovereignty now
belongs to Jesus Christ in every sphere of life.
Jesus is Lord.
He has been Lord from the beginning.
He will be Lord at the end.
Even now he is Lord.
