WELCOME                                                                    Rev. Trip Porch

One: This is the day that the Lord has made

All: Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

*CALL TO WORSHIP

One: We have come from far away and from right next door.

Many: We have come to be near God, and near each other.

One: Jesus tells us the law can be summed up in one great commandment

Many: Love God with all our heart, and soul, and mind and Love our neighbor as ourselves.

One: Everything God has ever asked of us grows out of these two.

Many: May we slow down long enough to hear them. Let us worship God.

*HYMN 795                                                            “Healer of Our Every Ill”                                   HEALER OF OUR EVERY ILL

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION                                                                                                 Michael Ayers

God who came near,  we have loved the world at a comfortable distance. We have said we love our neighbors  And yet never learned their names. We have kept our love for you private,  as if it were a matter between you and us   alone.  We have been afraid of places we have never been and certain about people we have never met.  We have moved through our days too fast to notice anyone.  Forgive us.  Slow us down. Open our doors.  Give us the courage to be known, and the patience to know.
 Silence for personal confession

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*RESPONSE OF PRAISE 582   “Glory to God, Whose Goodness Shines on Me”   GLORY TO GOD

     All:      And also with you.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

SCRIPTURE  Matthew 22:34-40     The VOICE

Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, a group of Pharisees met to consider new questions that might trip up Jesus. A legal expert thought of one that would certainly stump Him.

Pharisee: Teacher, of all the laws, which commandment is the greatest?

Jesus (quoting Scripture): “Love the Eternal One your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is nearly as important, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” The rest of the law, and all the teachings of the prophets, are but variations on these themes.
